For the plotting suggestions, I wonder if these researchers would find ggplot2 suitable for addressing their concerns :)

Thank you for suggesting. Admittedly, we are not working very extensively on this project currently, concentrating our effort on the finalisation of our small package for calculating life tables mortAAR (https://github.com/ISAAKiel/mortAAR). But when we come back to this subject, we will include ggplot2 graphics, like we did in mortAAR already.

I have queried my swiss contacts, who started using R recently, which features they would love to have in an archaeological package, and here is what they replied (I just put the answer here like I received it in plain german for discussion):
