Personally I think nonspecific would be better - the main selling point of WebVR is it works on everything, so I would make the most of that. Also... cross-buy is a good benefit - buy once and it'll work on all your future VR devices too.

I think more all-in-one headsets are just around the corner (probably xmas 2019?) and IIRC HTC teased that you'll be able to plug their standalone headset into a phone, so we'd want to be able to benefit from that (especially as those new platforms won't have too many games at first).

Another thing is Google Cardboard/gearvr/etc is an insanely large install base - while it's not full VR with controllers there are still a bunch of WebVR experiences that'd work just fine on those too.

As you say, changing might not be a big deal later on, but IMO it's just extra work down the line.

Also 'marketplace' sounds a bit formal? If we're trying to get people who are fed up with the Oculus/etc stores then maybe it's better to go with 'sandbox/playground/etc' or something fun?

I imagine there'd be a few free (or at least initially free) experiences so we don't want to think everything needs paying for.

vrarca.de?

ISNIT0 commented 5 years ago

Hmm, not sure. How about something playing off the Chuck E. Cheese brand? Famous in America for arcade games https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_E._Cheese%27s

chuckvr.com or vrcheese.com?

gfwilliams commented 5 years ago

I guess for me it's a bit too far removed (but then I only barely know Chuck E. Cheese) - you'd struggle to guess what it was from the name. Might be different in the US though? And that's the bigger market

Hmm, I guess it's not very international... I'd love something like vrcade.com, but I guess that would be expensive to buy :)

gfwilliams commented 5 years ago

Yeah :( https://vrca.de was my initial thought, but it's taken - interestingly by a VR games/hardware review site called vrcade.

webvrcade.com is taken, but webvrca.de is available - getting more long-winded, but I guess it's still snappy-ish.

:o xrca.de is free!

gfwilliams commented 5 years ago

Sounds good to me, especially as they are moving to the WebXR API

ISNIT0 commented 5 years ago

Bought it :)

ISNIT0 commented 5 years ago

I've got xrca.de and xarca.de they were £5 each :)

Wow, nice. Well, that's issue #1 closed then :)
