5 years ago Personally I think nonspecific would be better - the main selling point of WebVR is it works on everything, so I would make the most of that. Also... cross-buy is a good benefit - buy once and it'll work on all your future VR devices too.
I think more all-in-one headsets are just around the corner (probably xmas 2019?) and IIRC HTC teased that you'll be able to plug their standalone headset into a phone, so we'd want to be able to benefit from that (especially as those new platforms won't have too many games at first).
Another thing is Google Cardboard/gearvr/etc is an insanely large install base - while it's not full VR with controllers there are still a bunch of WebVR experiences that'd work just fine on those too.
As you say, changing might not be a big deal later on, but IMO it's just extra work down the line.
Random thoughts:
- It seems people are camping on lots of VR domains, but not so much on XR at the moment - but maybe that's a step too far.
- If we were specific, questxvr.com or something like that?
- Or going with easy to type: xr4444.com or something like that where it's longer but there's not much movement on the keyboard?
