Transfer Speeds Constantly Changing When Copying To USB Drive #236

Closed ghost closed 11 years ago

Hi,

I'm running Slackware 14.0 x86 with SpaceFM 0.8.3 and I've noticed that when I plug in a USB drive to my laptop which is USB 2 and I copy a movie from the laptop to the USB drive I will see the transfer speeds change different speeds everytime I copy different movies...

Sometimes I copy a movie and it's running at 20M then a few minutes later I'll copy another movie and it hits 60M, then another few minutes later I'll copy another one and it's like 12M...

It's never the same either, sometimes it starts out fast, other times slow and then it jumps around, changing either going faster or slower and I just don't understand why this is not consistent, why the speed jumps all the time, up and down and all over the place?

Not only is it reporting the speeds slower or faster but the time it takes to transfer it being affected, so it's not just reporting as an example just the speed, but the time it takes actually is slower or faster, so there is really something going with the speeds not being consistent.

THANKS

The system caches some data as its copying, so it will typically start faster then slow down, and other factors affect actual speeds. SpaceFM measures and reports them quite accurately in real time. You can see what spacefm is reporting here.

Sorry I'm not talking about a Cache that after the initial copying has started out fast and then it slows down.

I'll copy a movie and it's doing 60M, when it's done I'll copy another movie and then that one is copying at 20M, this is the problem, why did one as example start out copying for like at 60M, then when I was done another movie copied at 20M?

Or one will start out slower, like 30M then when it's done and I copy another movie it jumps up to 75M, so then in this situation why did it start out with the first copy slow then another movie fast?

I'm saying there is no consistency here it's all over the place and I'm not talking about changes in speed during the copy, I'm talking about each and everytime I copy another movie the speed is erractic and changes...

Am I making any sense now?

THANKS
