From Hunt Wagner, OSU OTDI Web Systems Administrator:

The general idea is that you setup an elastic IP in the AWS account for your EC2 to use, and go to your domain registrar and setup the subdomain. Based on a whois lookup, your registrar is namecheap. A more complete answer can be found by googling something like "How to setup subdomain AWS namecheap". There should be a good step by step guide out there.

Here's namecheap's article on creating a subdomain: https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/9776/2237/how-to-create-a-subdomain-for-my-domain/

And according to AWS docs:

You can have one Elastic IP (EIP) address associated with a running instance at no charge.

But

You will be charged "$0.005 per Elastic IP address not associated with a running instance per hour on a pro rata basis
