Update the new abiotic model with the BaseModel changes #381

Describe the bug The changes to the BaseModel introduced in #374 need to be added to the active new_abiotic_model branch to allow that to be merged into develop when it is ready. Rather than leave that until the model is more intricate, better to fix it up now.
