ASCII-mate now supports saving and loading ASCII art. The way this is done should be explained in the readme.
Once in the editor, you can use Ctrl + S to save.

To load a file, the path to the file needs to be passed as the first argument when launching ASCII-mate:
> lua main.lua my-cat-ascii-art
