What Will Change Everything? #2

Too long for Twitter, the following is my 'light response' to Nathan Miller's intriguing question: What Will Change Everything? Figured I'd post here to encourage others to chime in their thoughts as well...

The thing that I think will change everything, is the thing that seems to change everything in other industries—decentralized access and production of data.

Although on the surface, projects like @flux_io will be appealing to the industry, as it taps into the growing demand to roundtrip our data, I fear it will only create a bigger gate keeper to this data--which will ultimately impede true industry disruption.

We, as an industry, really need to embrace our versions of HTML, IPv4, .mp3, etc,--that is, a foundational technology/protocol that is owned by no one (or everyone). One which lowers the access barrier--allowing us to innovate at the edges.

I think IFCs and other BuildingSmart Standards are prime candidates for this foundation, but unfortunately feel they are currently too top-down driven and slow to market. It would be exciting and encouraging to see a large company like @flux_io (as Google, has done with many of their other technologies) take the initiative to publicly develop their own standards and open source technology.

To me, such initiatives would be a glimmer into 'the thing' that could change everything. @flux_io I hope you're listening. ;)
