Backport 1.20 changes #85

Since the 1.20 version works with spark, I have simply backported the changes. In prod this also seems to have fixed the issue. I would like to say that all I did was remove code (as was the same in 1.20). So it should be on par with 1.20, but I'm not sure why these classes were present if they aren't needed.
