Persona #9

Case: Myself

Scenario:

I have a group of friends of 11, which were members of hall committee back in university, known for 12 years. We rarely meet nowadays, mainly meet during some of us got married. We used to have gatherings every 3 month or so, but later on it became so hard to organize gatherings. Everytime, it started with someone suggesting a meetup, and then talk for date availability for a long conversation, ended up 4 of us can come, or just cancelled. Generally the meetup would be dinner and/or dessert, sometimes for drinks. Several active members gave up in calling for events, instead would call a small group only. For the past two years, the only meetups left were wedding ceremonies.

Case: Leo

There are usually two scenarios when I organize a night out.

Scenario 1:

I usually message a particular person if I want to catch up with them. Conversation is usually pretty short and goes something like this:

Leo: Yo. Wanna catch a drink sometime? Friend: Sure. Leo: What day is good for you? Friend: How about next Sat? Leo: Okay. Let's confirm time and location on the day. Friend: Okay.

Scenario 2:

I'm physically out with a group of people, let's say a meetup event. I shout out "who's in for a drink?" If a few people responds, then we go out.

cheeech commented 9 years ago

I only have one group in whatsapp that I always ask for happy hour. That group has 20 people.

We use the bat signal when someone initiates. People who are interested respond. Then it's about location. And then it's about time.

The location is more of a deal breaker than time since time is from 530-730 and everyone knows that.

It seems that everyone's flow is similar. Initiate, respond with interest, set location, set time.

So Mark,

What happens if no one answers the signal? Does that happen often? Do people feel bad if their signal never gets answered?

Or does the signal get rescheduled to another day?

Another question I have is how often does your friends bring in new people that your core group not know? Does it really require an app for that to happen? Or is it more like they just show up with those extra people? On Wed, 1 Jul, 2015 at 3:32 pm miteymouse notifications@github.com wrote:

If a signal doesn't get answered, then nothing happens. They'll just try the next day. I don't think anyone really feels bad about, since the group has so many people, usually at least one replies.

Other people have other groups too. So if someone has plans with another group, they usually invite the person who initiated the signal to the other groups happy hour...So in our app, I should be able to take a signal that I've been accepted to and share it with my own friends group. Maybe this is how the possibility of meeting new people comes about. No need for a second signal.

No one really brings new people into a whatsapp group that's been around for a long time because everyone needs to agree to bring that person in. It's like...political. That's why whatsapp isn't great for organizing happy hour between multiple groups.

So let's say I have two Whatsapp groups that both want to go to Happy Hour. I join one, then I send a message in the other saying I'm going to this other place. Join me if you want.

Then what value does Signal app really bring? On Wed, 1 Jul, 2015 at 3:59 pm miteymouse notifications@github.com wrote:

Is say that it not natural for whatsapp to do that. It's not seamless. There's friction there because its a message being passed on to someone outside the group. For signal, you can easily pass on the signal itself without any messaging...
