Aircraft in the game will usualy ignore enemies encountered while having the move command issued and active.
In platoons the aircraft weapons are set to automatic firing mode and will lock on to the first encountered unit. The unit will be shot at if in range, but keep being the target when it gets out of range or leaves the firing arc, effectively locking the weapons from reusage unless the target is killed or gets far outside of range - effectively, the weapons will usualy fire only once at best.

Select group of aircraft
Issue movement command with route crossing enemy forces
Watch Aircraft die without defending themselves
Expected behavior
Aircraft should lock and attack enemy units and structures when encountering them. The target should be switched when for example only capable of firing forward and target gets behind aircraft. Bombs should have leeway and be dropped even if target position is not exactly below the bomber.
Turning off 'fire at will' should be only optional.
