Check state update for each flow

The purpose of checking each flow for the correct state updates is:

• identify common updates across flows
• identify how update functionality may be grouped so that contract architecture becomes more ordered & modular

The outcome should be some more formal grouping of functionality which can inform on how to update contract architecture/storage.

Earnings should probably be its own internal contract and/or have its own storage as updating earnings state is required in almost every flow.
