On the initial card deck, on the second card, there is some code visible within the text.

“...primary threats to salmon survival. [md2] In 2014, nineteen [md3] populations of…”.

That's not code?

It's the content that's in the JSON file.

is that a question? or are you saying that the characters in brackets are text entered in the json file? how would you like to resolve this?

They are in the JSON files. Please remove the [md#] text from there.
