I think confusion arises around the rules for qualifying vs. the rules for computing results.
https://www.iac.org/legacy/collegiate-program-rules
The rules for a team to qualify require one of the team to fly three or more contests in Sportsman*.
The rules for computing the result require selecting one team member's Sportsman result and any results from two other team members. The computation searches for the combination that gives the highest average. The collegiate results posting shows with a 't' which team member contest results make-up the best combination for the team computation.
So qualification requires one team member flying three Sportsman competitions. Computation requires selection of one Sportsman result from any team member. UND qualified with Alex Tally. Their team result used the Sportsman flight from Mitchell Oswald.
*In all cases, substitute "Higher than Primary" for "Sportsman".
I received a query from one of the team coaches, "For team standings I was under the impression a team requires three pilots who all fly three competitions. One of them has to fly three higher than primary."
Referring to 2017 results:
"The UND Sportsman pilot Mitchell Oswald flew two Sportsman competitions, but is marked with a t.
"The UND team Sportsman Alex Tally flew three Sportsman competitions but is not marked with a t."
