Changes from #221 #224 #225 moved into this new PR. This adds testing framework, lapply_df function, and documentation tweaks.

@bpbond Nice idea with the utility function. Definitely makes the code easier to read and "DRY"er. Also big thanks for your work on the test framework. This has been on my to-do list for many months.

I'll accept the PR pending travis build.
