At the moment they’re quite inconsistent and difficult to use. Also, there is no exectuable that provides an interface corresponding to plutus-ledger-api (being aware of ledger language versions, protocol versions, etc.).

It would be good to tidy this up and maybe record the design in an ADR.

We had a good discussion with @Unisay about it. But it is not finished yet. We neeed a couple of more discussions
