Seems it's not always with a payload. This guy's miles out, no idea why.
Also, I kept watching and that drone kept going until it was over 40km out before I gave up and reloaded. But on reloading, it turned straight back.
Should be fixed in Alpha 12.
Nice one, will keep an eye out.
Hard to completely disprove, but the drones seem to behave on the original savegames once I reset their orders (not before), so I will take the devs' word for it and close this one.

A10-11 10 why is that drone going off East.zip A10-11 11.zip
In both of these examples, drones carrying mineral ore have headed 1000s of metres away from the other ships. They've already got a payload, all the ships in the fleet are huddled together, so there's no reason for the drones to go where they're going. Eventually they turn back (in the case of savegame 10, right after you re-load, but for savegame 11, a couple of drones are still wandering off for a while longer) - but there's no good reason for the detour.

Is it something that used to work before?
Yes
Expected behavior
Drones should go directly to their destination if they've already got a payload and nothing else to do.
Actual behavior
See above.
Repro steps
See savegames. In this playthrough the ships have been mining and salvaging round various points on this map, and the Industrious has visited several systems including two long range comet mining expeditions, but that shouldn't alter where the drones are headed at the time the game was saved.
