The /docs directory was used for the demos as it was the simplest way to configure GitHub Pages at the time (not sure if it's still the same).
I don't like the branch option of GitHub Pages because it complicates the ability to know the repo's contents. It probably has some advantages, but for now it doesn't seem worth it.
It would make more sense to put the documentation site at this path, though. Probably the best thing to do is move the demos to a subfolder of this path.
