Create a finalist page for AI World Championship #2144

Closed rsgonzal closed 5 years ago

rsgonzal commented 5 years ago

To replace AI World Championship tab.

Non- winning families can opt in to share their ideas.

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

TC for reference https://technovationchallenge.org/season-results/

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

So I'm thinking of replacing the AI World Championship tab with family's consented submissions - very similar to Devin's TC reference. uploads/ce3d3eb2-3b5c-4433-806c-88761ed3e140/AIWC_2143-V1.png

Do you know if we have copy available for this page? @rsgonzal

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

loving the direction!!

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Thanks Devin! Roxana and I just worked on this current mockup. I'll be using dummy data to draft out the page.

We left out the stats section - since we want to get this out quickly we think it's best we reveal that information out when we publicly showcase the winners. Doesn't seem necessary for the webpage. uploads/5994e6fc-7b82-4a1b-be25-02f569d447ea/Screen Shot 2019-01-24 at 2.19.18 PM.png

What do you think @devincdillon ?

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

love it! Only thing is we don't really have semifinalists, but I think that section works to showcase the other submissions (rebecca will give the losers ;) ability to opt in to have their ideas showcased)

rsgonzal commented 5 years ago

Yes! That's what we meant!

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Here's where I'm currently at. I created a banner for this page, but I think it's competing with the two headers we currently have. So, I'm thinking of replacing it with pictures of happy and engaged families. But what do you think @rsgonzal and @devincdillon

uploads/48e1803e-d15f-42a7-bf7e-d16dc0b0aa55/screencapture-localhost-8000-aichallenge-worldchampionship-2019-01-30-16_22_50.png

Oh! I would like to pick your brain on the carousel @rachwyatt :)

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

Broad thoughts for you to munch on...

I worry a little bit that we are "burying the lead" by far the most important part of this page are our participant stories, not the trip they win

agree the banner doesn't fit. maybe a different visual up top of how many countries submit, what types of problems solved? something that shows me more about what they community is up to? just brainstorming

maybe pull the world championship details to the submissions page. if you submit you get this! type of thing

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Yes, I see. I will work out a way to showcase the global community around AIFC and participant stories.

I also think it makes better sense for the World Championship details to be moved over to the Submissions Page. That should be another card.

rsgonzal commented 5 years ago

I don't think the details need to be moved, because these are the winners already... maybe if we just list the major things, like they'll be coming to sv to compete.

i do think it needs a flashier title, like these are the finalists!! but not necessarily another banner

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

I created a doc where I'll be editting the copy before I add it to the page. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1p1peIXFrcmY1v40maMHqU5QHkRCvpsnJqjOHerI0OlA/edit#

I'm planning on changing the layout a bit to add in visuals that incorporate AIFC's global community that's passionate to make the world a better place. I showed Audra my progress on this page and we think adding in a "Hero" background video could work. This is a video that I think might be good to use. https://www.dropbox.com/home/Video/exports/AIFC%202018/AIFC%20Coimbatore%202018?preview=AIFC_FINAL-GoogleOrg.mp4 uploads/624eacac-fa98-4882-92e0-008cd5ea644f/Screen Shot 2019-01-31 at 4.37.15 PM.png

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

ruby I love that you are finding a place to use that video :) this is all looking awesome

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

It's such a great video! But we will have it as a back though. Audra will be working on another video and when it's done I'll replace it.

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Thanks for your help on the video @rachwyatt :) Here is my current progress with the page. The copy and carousel still need some work, but the over all structure is where I want it.

I clipped the Google video to just show case the challenges and projects. The video is 19 seconds and runs in a loop. @audsbodin Do you think this video can work? https://www.dropbox.com/s/pl8mdkun1cpejmr/VideoExample.mov?dl=0 uploads/e237930b-b927-415d-9a34-06454d6b7c08/screencapture-localhost-8000-aichallenge-worldchampionship-2019-02-06-13_37_13.png

audsbodin commented 5 years ago

Looks very nice :) I love it. The only concern I would have is whether the hero video would slow page load terribly on poor connections.

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

HI all! @rsgonzal and @RRios00 I still think we need to trim the AI world championship text down. Also the clipart trophy feels a little out of date on this page.

However, I am deferring to you all, so take my feedback or leave it. Ideally, the goal would be to push press and potential funders here, so want to keep this very focused on showcasing our submissions and families

audsbodin commented 5 years ago

Revising video thoughts based on Devin's comments: if the primary audience is corporate and press, page load may be less of a concern, and the hero vid could be helpful in keeping attention. Might be helpful to include a shot or replace one of the hands-on activity shots with this piece: 2:28-2:32 https://www.dropbox.com/s/aua6mylsyb5rq1j/AIFC_FINAL_WITHOUT_GRAPHICS_MUSIC_SUBTITLES.mp4?dl=0

rsgonzal commented 5 years ago

thank you both for your feedback! @devincdillon we were already planning on cutting that top piece out :)

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Yes, you're right Audra. The video should be fine - It's less than 20 seconds long, has been web optimized and there will be an image of families replacing the video (the image will have the same collage/network aesthetic that we've been using for the AIWC/AIFC content).

My next steps for this ticket are: • Create an image banner of families to replace the hero video when load speeds are slow • Remove the trophy and create an image of families • Edit the video to include the clip 2:28-2:32 • Work with @rachwyatt on the carousel for families who want to share their idea • Work with @rsgonzal to condense the copy

I will update you all soon!

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

hey ruby! do you have another screenshot of where this one is at? I think you mentioned it's mostly done

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Hey Devin! Here's a screen shot of where the page currently is. I will be working with Roxana on the copy and Rachel with the carousel. uploads/45153770-7b9d-447b-9286-2735ef185a1f/screencapture-localhost-8000-aichallenge-worldchampionship-2019-02-11-14_23_58.png

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Looks like we're really close to wrapping up this ticket. Thank you @rachwyatt for your help. The next step is working with @rsgonzal on the copy; we'll be fleshing it out on this doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1p1peIXFrcmY1v40maMHqU5QHkRCvpsnJqjOHerI0OlA/edit#

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Roxana and I worked on the copy for this page. I did include some more text to help describe the icons a bit more. @devincdillon please let me know if I'm missing anything else.

Hi @rachwyatt I would love to have your help here. I would like for the modal with the subcategories to appear when you hover over the category icon, instead of having to click it. I just pushed this branch back up.

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

Hi Ruby,

A few thoughts - can you take a pass at adapting especially the top part a little?

on the copy can you say 7500+ participants and 207 submissions (I worry that 207 is low without the context-don't want press just seeing the 207 if we direct them only to this page)

I think the top banner + globe icon are a bit big. I'm worried still that the most important part of this page - the submissions are not as highlighted as the categories, which aren't to revolutionary. Maybe we can reduce the size of those icons as well. Might make sense to remove the globe and push up the category icons, as the globe doesn't share a ton of program - important information

also i will loop kristen onto this to give her thoughts, as we will push press to this and want to get her direction

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Thanks Devin, I incorporated the feedbac. And for better reference, here's a screen recording of the web page: https://www.dropbox.com/home/Web%20Assets/Curiosity%20Machine/Test?preview=AIWC_Draft3.mov uploads/45995d12-d3bd-4951-a386-7bd1b8ee0d09/screencapture-localhost-8000-aichallenge-worldchampionship-2019-02-21-12_53_46.png

kmstippi commented 5 years ago

Hi, Devin looped me in and I took a quick look. Overall I agree re: the top image; I think an action shot of a family in the background would be stronger; this is a program for families, we want to see families right away, learning and growing. Is it possible to make that panel smaller so you can get to the submissions faster? "Received participants" isn't grammatically correct. We had 7500 participants and 200+ submissions in our first ever AI World Championship.

Agree we need to downplay the solutions section. I think for Technovation we've done it where we share that information after the fact. Last year I believe it was an infographic. That would be a nice way to share the information - and more data/details when we've analyzed a bit more - and keep this page more focused on the finalists for now.

I think instead of "here are our finalists" you could say something like "Meet our finalists and discover how they are solving problems with AI. They will be presenting their ideas in Silicon Valley, CA May 16-19."

Doesn't need to be that verbatim, but I'd recommend copy that is a bit more active voice.

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Hey @kmstippi and @devincdillon I've included the feedback and kept the page simple. Here's a screen grab of what the page looks like: https://www.dropbox.com/s/0n6dz9coydr30qd/aiwc_Draft4.mov?dl=0

I'll save the stats just in case we would like to incorporate them anywhere else.

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

Hi Ruby,

kristen and gave some feedback in dropbox in case you didn't get a notification :)

I like the changes you made and pulling the family pictures up. Definitely we can work to weave that stats in elsewhere. Seeing the direction this page needed to go in, makes sense to pull them off for now

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

I'll be tightening up the copy and I just check in with Audra on the video she's working on that incorporates families working together. The video should be ready Feb. 27 and once I compress and optimize it for the web, I will push it and make a PR by then. I think that'll be enough time for technical editing time. What do you think @rsgonzal ?

rsgonzal commented 5 years ago

Thank you guys for the feedback! In the future can we try to leave comments on here? It's easier to follow progress on the tickets.

From Kristen:

Thanks for sharing this, Ruby. I like how you've tightened up the page. A few thoughts:

Could we have the footage that is at the top show people working on projects? Audra may have some mashed together footage from our social efforts that could work there; I think you want to see people working together embodying that curiosity and creativity.

I think we can tighten up the "congratulations" copy a bit more.

I like the image of all the people though and how you've put that together.

Knowing that many people will be checking out this site, it seems like a miss to not have a call to action on the page if we're taking the time to drive people here, what do we want them to do?

I'd suggest at the bottom of the page (if we have it ready) we 1) encourage people to sign up to get an update when season 2 registration with a clickable button (it'll grow our email list and then we can send them a note when the registration period opens) or 2) If they can register now, we encourage them to register for season 2 and include a clickable button driving them over to do that.

I'd suggest that at the bottom of the page as their main interest is to see the finalists. But if they like what they see, or think - "gosh, I want to be part of that" we want it to be very easy for them to click and go.

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

thank you roxana and agree on the CTA you tagged me on :)

RRios00 commented 5 years ago

Hey @devincdillon and @rsgonzal

There are a few things that have to get done on this page: • Edit the top video (remove text and condense)

• Upload all submission videos to CM's YouTube (leave private until Tuesday morning)

• Possible copy changes

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

@RRios00

thanks for update! @amyiridescent is working on tighter copy. Amy, can you get this to ruby by EOD?

amyiridescent commented 5 years ago

So I was planning on pulling out some technical elements of each submission and having that be in addition to the description the families wrote. Do you want it to replace it? You tell me.

I can't do this EOD today but should be able to by tomorrow. I have meetings straight through 4pm today.

devincdillon commented 5 years ago

Okay Ruby here are the descriptions, but of course I'm worried about the lengths generally looking visually similar (if you have any ideas for addressing that). Otherwise, some editing/wordsmithing might be needed if any are drastically different

My Drawings Speak Up: Everyone has the right to feel safe, loved and accepted, but bullying is a problem that affects millions of students each day. My Drawings Speak Up is an invention that analyzes students’ drawings to indicate if a parent needs to seek professional support.

More about the AI: This invention uses image recognition technology to analyze children's drawings and notify an adult when a child is facing bullying (violence). The algorithm was trained using hand drawn images from children as well as drawings from trained psychologists.

Duckweed Vacuum Cleaner: Duckweed is a plant that negatively impacts Lake Titicaca. Duckweed Vacuum Cleaner observes and removes the plant from the water.

More about the AI: This prototype uses a camera to collect data for it’s image recognition algorithm. Once it’s determined that the harmful duckweed is present, the prototype (controlled by Raspberry Pi and powered by a DC motor) vacuums up the duckweed.

Cavity Crusher: Even though dentists report that proper tooth brushing can help in maintain oral health, an increasing number of children are facing tooth decay problems. Cavity Crusher uses AI to monitor a child’s brushing habits and notifies adults if more time should be spent on the task.

More about the AI: Cavity Crusher’s algorithm uses time of brushing to determine a child’s oral health habits. If the model determines inadequate toothbrushing, it will notify the parent. Prior to this prototype, the family built a model able to recognize images of toothbrushing. However, they determined more accurate results could be achieved with number data.

Shoo: For generations, children everywhere have dealt with the nuisance of dogs defecating in their yards and needing to clean it up. Meet shoo, a dog deterrent device built with AI technology.

More about the AI: Shoo uses a live camera to collect images and pass them through an image recognition algorithm to determine if a dog is in a specified area. If an animal is present, the device emits a high pitch sound that deters it from staying. The prototype uses Raspberry Pi and the algorithm is written via Scratch X.

Scoutbot: Yearly, thousands of children drown across the world. Scoutbot WaterGuardian is an invention that notifies adults of risky swimming behavior via swimming caps equipped with alert systems.

More about the AI: Scoutbot Waterguardian’s prototype is a wearable device that uses an image analysis algorithm to determine if a swimmer is safe. To train their model, the team collected data from people wearing their prototype while underwater. If a person is at risk, the prototype will send a signal to a device that emits red light.

Spiky: Spiky is a mobile application that helps adults recognize when a child is being bullied. The invention uses machine learning to analyze communications from a child to guess the probability of bullying. Spiky will send an alert to parents if action is needed.

More about the AI: The user can input data into the mobile application via a series of rating questions. Based on the data, the AI algorithm will determine appropriate follow up questions. A child’s answers to the follow up questions can be used to further train the model and notify a parent of the risk level. The Spiky team also plans on collecting images from schools to be used in addition to the text input.
