I cannot replicate this on 1.20.6.
With Freecam mod and in free-cam mode in a cave? I can give it another test. Also for me it wasnt 100% dark. But 90% of the area... So I was able to see some caves, but 90% was just black.
Can confirm with iris1.7.0+1.20.1 and freecam. In my case if the camera goes into blocks chunks disappear and renders nothing

I get the same behavior with iris-1.7.0+mc1.20.6.jar.
Screenshot with iris 1.7.0-1.20.4 and freecam 1.2.3-1.20.4.
Can confirm with iris1.7.1+1.21 and freecam v1.3.0-beta1+mc1.21 Also, if the player is in spectator mode, the territory will be rendered

Has any progress been made in identifying the cause of this issue?
What happened?
Basically this happens withs Iris 1.7.0: https://github.com/MinecraftFreecam/Freecam/issues/205
While with 1.6.7 it doesnt. Did you add some logic, that nothing gets rendered where the user is not actually looking?
Can that be disabled in Mod-menu? Config file?
