This citation is currently being parsed as a journal article (because of the abbreviation Abhandl.Gesch.Veterinärmed..

It's obviously not being parsed correctly.

Is it in fact a book series? And the number 20 indicates the 20th book in a series?

Yes, that is correct. The parentheses contain the title of a book series followed by the number in the series
