2 years ago I've figured out that you can mix two different wood types to make a chest. It works even with two modded woods that can't produce a chest by themselves. Not sure how this could be communicated to the player unless you want to include a tips and tricks book in the modpack.
When you aren't starting with a pre-generated world the lack of normal wood can become a real issue since it's hard to get chests to store things in. I would suggest adding chests for modded wood (should be mods that fix that) or have them make oak chests.
