That may be. And at the same time that's ridiculous. Personal computers that large are cost-prohibitive (especially under the new Mac M1 architecture), and institutions also shouldn't have to furnish/pay for so many resources to be available. What percentage of the running time do we actually need all this scaled-up infrastructure? Can't we find a way to develop and work with less?
Unless you specifically need to be developing/testing ISLE (valid requirement), Islandora Playbook runs comfortably in 8 GB.
Tech call 2021-05-19: Contradictory experience in the field. Needs more investigation, particularly the minimum requirements for dev laptops and dedicated servers.
It needs to be clearly documented that the minimum RAM requirements for ISLE is 16GB. We had tried 8GB for the ICG test Islandora 8 site and consistently experienced erratic behavior in which the Docker service would cease functioning correctly. Updating this (thank you Noah Smith!) to 16GB enabled reliable uptime.
