Currently, purple for ETH and pink for Kovan and green for ETC are introducing slight confusion to the user.

ETH, ETC have icons already. I would recommend using these platform icons wherever possible. That way there are two (2) identifiers; word label + icon. Building the labels to be able to accommodate icons later when a Kovan/TestRPC label exists. Also, Tokens would be great to distinguish visually by their icons (see https://coinmarketcap.com/)

Yes, this was in an earlier version of Spectrum, but became annoying to maintain during development (and there are tonnes of icons to get).
