Driver support for multiple fingers is already enabled but... doesn't report multiple fingers

I'm on a Compaq Presario CQ61 which from what i can find through google has 
synaptic touchpad. I have downloaded and got the applictation to show in the 
task bar. when i right click to change settings it says: 

"Driver support for multiple fingers is already enabled but the driver still 
doesn't report multiple fingers. Either you haven't restarted the system yet or 
your touchpad doesn't support multiple fingers"
I have downloaded the new driver, and tried the old German one, anyone have any 
other ideas?
