5.x: rollback to the 3.20.0 state (#471) #472

This pull request reverts all changes made in 4.x and brings the codebase back to 3.20.0. This should become a starting point for a new stable 5.x release. (See issue #471.)

@steffen-schroeder-by Rebased and force pushed, so if there aren't any other changes required, we're good to build 5.0.0rc1.
