The source of this discrepancy was an error in calculating emission volumes when pre-processing the data used for CEDS. This will be corrected in the next CEDS release early 2023.
As a workaround until then, for users that would like 100% compatibility with the CMIP5 era data, the CMIP5 3-D aircraft emission data can be scaled to match the global totals in the CEDS data.
This has been fixed for the v_2021_04_21 data release, with corrected gridded emissions archived on zenodo.
Thank you, Steve, for correcting this and making it available to the community! Is there any plan to make this new version more visible? It seems that currently other pages mentioning the CEDS data set still list the original v_2021_04_21 data release as the most recent one. Also, I assume there are not plans to update the SSP emission data accordingly?
The correction is now in the CEDS community in Zenodo. No plans at this point to update the SSP data.
Thor et al. have identified an inconsistency in latitudinal distribution of gridded aviation emissions present in current CEDS gridded data.
