Temperature and radiative forcing policies are global, but GCAM includes an Africa_Western region that can be used for analysis. Its countries are listed in https://github.com/JGCRI/gcam-core/blob/master/input/gcamdata/inst/extdata/common/iso_GCAM_regID.csv
In that file the region number GCAM_region_ID
of Africa_Western is 5.
The steps to use for running temperature or radiative forcing targets are described in the user guide at https://jgcri.github.io/gcam-doc/user-guide.html#target-finder
I've never run a temperature target; I'd recommend starting with a 2.6 W/m2 radiative forcing target, because that's part of our standard testing suite, and any release of GCAM can run it with no problems, though I don't know what temperature a 2.6 W/m2 scenario will return.
After attempting to install from source version 7, I am using version 6 binary on an old mac. After running the reference scenarios after hours it ends with this:
Period 21: 2100 Model solved normally. Iterations period 21: 145. Total iterations: 5646
All model periods solved correctly. Model run completed. Printing output Starting output to XML Database. /Users/sarr/work/gcam-v6.0/exe/.basex: writing new configuration file. Model run completed. Model exiting successfully.
This looks like a successful run but when using the model interface I did not see any xml file il the output/ directory this is what I have.
(base) macasarr:database_basexdb sarr$ ls -l total 6909400 -rw-r--r-- 1 sarr staff 290501406 Apr 3 11:00 atv.basex -rw-r--r-- 1 sarr staff 4624 Apr 3 11:00 inf.basex -rw-r--r-- 1 sarr staff 2962714624 Apr 3 11:00 tbl.basex -rw-r--r-- 1 sarr staff 9 Apr 3 11:00 tbli.basex -rw-r--r-- 1 sarr staff 271252916 Apr 3 11:00 txt.basex -rw-r--r-- 1 sarr staff 4 Apr 3 10:52 txtl.basex -rw-r--r-- 1 sarr staff 0 Apr 3 10:52 txtr.basex
1) How can I postprocess this? or is something missing in the setting?
2) Also I saw in the configure file that the scenarios i:
This looks like it worked correctly; the output database is stored as a folder, typically called database_basexdb
, in the output
folder of the workspace. The files within it are not read directly. The instructions for basic querying and post-processing are in https://jgcri.github.io/gcam-doc/user-guide.html#modelinterface
If you just want to do queries to look at the output, just open up the ModelInterface and select File -> Open -> DB Open, and select the database_basexdb folder.
To run a 2.6, change that 4p5 to 2p6 in the policy-target-file
File, and also set the Bool find-path
to 1. In the standard/default configuration file, that 4.5 file is not actually used as find-path
is set to 0.
In fact, I followed this many time by doing what you said on modelinteface:File
File -> Open -> DB Open and select database_basexdb in the output directory but nothing happens (attached).
I have the same behavior with baseX installed!

Hello there, I am new to IAM and want to perform the simulations mentioned above with impacts focused on targeted West African countries. I wonder if GCAM can be used in this region? and if there are examples as guidance.
