Update util function test #55

Add the test for the util functions this is part of the testing update as part of the prep for JOSS submission.

@abigailsnyder finally figured out how to test to see if an error is thrown!

@kdorheim I opened a PR reverting the change and tagged you as reviewer. Then as long as your krd-more-test branch hasn't been deleted, you can open a new pr for this
