The current SSF systems use very different Surface fluxes. CMEMS asked all system to switch to use ECMWF Bulk Formula, which AMM15 did. This had a negative impact on the AMM7 BGC, so MO Direct fluxes were kept for AMM. As AMM15 has had a bottom temperature bias issue, one of the possible causes is the choice of surface fluxes. As we are now leaving Brexit we have the opportunity to change our surface fluxes to increase the similarity of our systems, and potentially reduce the bottom temperature bias issue (issue #5).

We have undertaken a number of scientific trials to assess different surface fluxes, an alternate turbulent closure scheme, the impact of data assimilation, and the impact of waves. These tests are currently ongoing. We originally aimed to implement these at PS47 however we are likely to purchase ECMWF surface fluxes, so this may be at a later parallel suite.
