Copied from an e-mail dating from 27 April 2023 by @sberthou regarding AMM15: Shorter term plan (~2026, PS49) is to develop a river product from the operational forecast (probably a mix of global (Europe) and regional (UK) for OOFS. Challenges are to get good river quality from the default regional atmosphere-land configurations that we have, which is not quite there yet. There are tensions between having a land model which provides good rivers and a land model which provides good lower boundary condition for the atmosphere. At the Met Office, the latter had always priority, so we're working on combining both. Longer term plan: when regional coupled system becomes operational (on Gen2, after 2028, with LFRic at atmosphere), the aim is to get the rivers from the atmosphere-land forecast directly into the ocean (at least for the UK).

For developing/testing the configuration, reanalysis products are available and Sarah Wakelin has assessed these, ESSD - GloFAS-ERA5 operational global river discharge reanalysis 1979-present dataset is good for Europe but JRA's rivers discharge is better for Global ocean. CO10 development tests will be forced by ERA5 and run with associated GloFAS.
