Hi Jake! This pull request is open for quite a while.. is there a reason it's not merged yet? I would like to fork from this repo to do some experiments and probably contribute back, and I would greatly appreciate if you comment how final are "V4" updates.

@dsvolk - thanks for your interest in this library and sorry for the slow reply! I never merged it because I decided I didn't like the whole approach, I'm going to decline this PR and instead merge https://github.com/JakeColtman/bartpy/pull/38 which goes a different (faster and lighter) way. If you're still interested in playing with bartpy, I'd clone that or wait for it to be merged in the near future :)
