Potentially out of scope, but more and more videos are created/shared these days alongside pictures. Might only be for the Pi 3 and above. I guess the old Pi 0 does have a HW H264 decoder.
I know pivid exists, and the Raspberry Pi guys have tried to push a lot of things away from omxplayer and the old "Legacy" OS. Would have to do some testing to see what works on what hardware and what support looks like.
