Following the discussion on Patreon, here's what I'm considering doing:
Types
To make things simple, weapons would come in "sets" for dual wield/shied types. Each thong class will be able to use one or more types. I'd like to introduce the following weapon types. (Default is for the default weapons, each player will have one of each type at start that can't be traded or removed, like in TF2.)
Magic. Staves primarily. Will go on your back as casters will resume casting with their hips. Default mana increase.
Defensive. Sword/Board combinations. Default HP increase.
2-Handed. Default power increase.
Dual Wield - Default crit increase.
Stats
I would like all stats to be side-grades. Trying to keep them balanced within reason. Some ideas for weapon stats:
Staff of Empowerment: Increases damage done based on distance to your target.
Bulwark of Sanctity: Increases healing received.
Spear of the Wind: Increases effect of your AoE abilities.
Lifebane Daggers: Heals you for 2HP whenever you attack.
