I think it is enough to support Java 8 in the future. Java 7 based release is still in place and if somebody like to take it up and maintain it, feel free to do so. If somebody wants to take over this responsibility (and has time end need to do so), I would be very happy.

Of course it can only be dropped with a full new version of the JSR. From what we heard, especially Zalando does use both and unless it switched all its Java EE servers to Java 8 by now, it should still do.

Unless a new version of the RI starts with Java SE 8, 9 or 11 (we don't know, how long it'll take CS to find a new Spec Lead or initiate a transfer-ballot) already, using the multi-release JAR feature could help support earlier Java versions where needed.
