I'm opening this pull request now. I haven't yet finished the pinch example as I haven't gotten time for it. But hopefully leaving this PR here will push me to work on it. And maybe someone else can step up to do some of the work as well.

Sorry Jed been super busy. I'll remove the useless file diffs at least. I will remove the pinch example from this PR, and work on that separately.

@JedWatson All done.

went through each commit since I originally did the refactor. And incorporated those changes exactly.
reverted all the built files to exactly what they are in the repo right now
fixed styling issues in example/src (was done at ReactEurope itself)
left the stubs for the pinch test. I'll work on it in a separate PR.
