Looks like slock in suckless-tools may be of interest.

Alternatively, exec xscreensaver from .ratpoisonrc, then bind top C-M-L to xscreensaver-command -lock.

The latest release of ubuntu seems to handle these things on its own, so I'm dropping this issue.
