Unresolved discrepancies #194

Open Mick1303 opened 2 years ago

This is for cases when discrepancy exists say between ATP and ITF or between other credible sources and we can't find deciding evidence one way or another. For future investigations.

ATP/ITF discrepancy. Barcelona-2 1976 (tid 1976-278). You (and ATP) have Adriano Panatta beating Alberto Martorell. ITF has Antonio Martorell rather than Alberto. https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournament/barcelona/esp/1976/m-gp-esp-03a-1976/draws-and-results/ Needs a decider. Actually in Barcelona 3 (tid 1976-425) there is the same discrepancy.

In Tehran 1976 ITF has Manuel Orantes beating Joel Ross (USA), while ATP has Orantes beating John Ross (NZL). Tennisabstarct had another John Ross – from USA. But American John Ross was born in 1964 and was 12 yo. Nonetheless discrepancy exists and needs to be sorted out. Links: https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/archive/tehran/2011/1976/results, https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournament/tehran/iri/1976/m-gp-iri-01a-1976/draws-and-results/

In 1976 Stockholm (1976-429) the discrepancy about Joel/John Ross is the other way around. ATP has Joel Ross, while ITF has John Ross (USA). https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournament/stockholm/swe/1976/m-gp-swe-03a-1976/draws-and-results/. ITF does not have an age for that John Ross, but according to ATP American John Ross was 12 yo. In this case I tend to go with Joel Ross and ATP. But if this could be confirmed by newspapers – we will be able to close the issue.

In response:

In Tehran 1976 Newspapers have John Ross (US). ATP doesn't have any pre-1982 results for that guy (https://www.atptour.com/en/players/john-ross/r042/overview), so it does seem unlikely. I'm not sure what to think about this one.

In 1976 Stockholm (1976-429) Joel Ross (US). It seems most likely that Stockholm and Tehran are the same guy -- John Ross (USA) is too young, and the NZL guy hadn't played abroad in several years.

========= For the time being we went with Joel Ross in both cases, but purely on probabilities. There are also possibilities (albeit remote): a) ATP has DOB wrong for American John Ross and he could play there b) There is another American John Ross

In any case there is no conclusive evidence so far.

There is a 3-way split on who did Rosco Tanner beat in R32 in Manila 74. You have Ernie McCabe, ATP has Elwyn McCabe (https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/archive/manila/362/1974/results) and ITF has Eugene McCabe (https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournament/manila/phi/1974/m-gp-phi-01a-1974/draws-and-results/) ====response===== Now a 4-way split! Most of the US newspapers have "M. McKaid (US)." (That person doesn't exist, I don't think.) I found one that says "Ed McKaid." This is just a guess, but I suspect it's Elwyn. Since "Elwyn" is an unusual name, that's the most likely one for someone to get wrong when copying down. But this one could be tough to settle with certainty.

Winbledon 73. ATP has Toshiro Sakai beating Frew McMillan in R128, while ITF has Kenneth McMillan rather than Frew. https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournament/wimbledon/gbr/1973/m-sl-gbr-01a-1973/draws-and-results/, https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/archive/wimbledon/540/1973/results

========

The London Telegraph printed complete Wimbledon results, and they have JP Meyer (Fra) as the loser to Sakai! (Same score as the ATP/ITF result vs McMillan.) ATP has McMillan as a LL, so I thought maybe the Telegraph didn't update the draw for withdrawals ... but I checked the other LLs listed by ATP, and all of those match what the Telegraph has. This was the year of the boycott, so the draw was chaotic -- pretty much everyone in qualifying got in the main draw. But... Meyer lost in final round qualifying, and Ken McMillan lost in first-round qualifying.

It definitely wasn't Frew. He was the defending doubles champion, but he didn't play because of the boycott

========

For the time being we are left with more probable version of Ken McMillan. It is also repeated by Wiki (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_Wimbledon_Championships_%E2%80%93_Men%27s_singles) and TennisArchives (https://www.tennisarchives.com/edition/?v=1873). But it is possible that they mistakenly copy each other from the same source. Definitive evidence is lacking so far.

In Catania 71 (1971-2065) ATP(https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/archive/catania/2065/1971/results) has Massimo Di Domenico beating Gerry Perry in R32. ITF (https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournament/catania/ita/1971/m-gp-ita-02a-1971/draws-and-results/ ) has Norman Perry rather than Gerry. Also ATP has Patrice Dominguez beating Maurizio Bonaiti, while ITF has, Luciano Bonati rather than Maurizio Bonaiti.

In Palermo 71 again ATP has Gerry Perry (https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/archive/palermo/325/1971/results), while ITF (https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournament/palermo/ita/1971/m-gp-ita-01a-1971/draws-and-results/) has Norman Perry.

=======

I can't find anything on Catania or Palermo. I will change Palermo to Gerry ... I have no idea which one is right, but it does seem like it is probably the same Perry in both tournaments.

======

Regarding Bonati/Bonaiti - there is also a version of TennisArchives - https://www.tennisarchives.com/edition/?v=18661 They have "Luciano Bonaiti".

Another case of 3-way split. Australian Open 1971. Who did Phil Dent beat in R64. You (and wiki) have him beating Gordon Forbes. ATP (https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/archive/australian-open/580/1971/results) has Garry Forbes. ITF (https://www.itftennis.com/en/tournament/australian-open/aus/1971/m-sl-aus-01a-1971/draws-and-results/) has Gavin Forbes.

======

No conclusive evidence, since newspapers only have "G Forbes"

=======

Gavin Forbes is also taken from TennisArchives. See https://www.tennisarchives.com/player/?pl=10937. They have some matches credited to him - overall 13 tournaments. And he is in the draw of Oz Open in 71. Maybe he is the same guy ATP has as "Garry". But TennisArchives has more on him

In Washington 69 (1969-418) ATP has Allan Stone beating Armistead Neely (https://www.atptour.com/en/scores/archive/washington/418/1969/results) , while TA (https://www.tennisarchives.com/edition/?v=5697) has Edgar Neely there.

======

I don't know about Washington 1969. I couldn't find anything in newspapers. It really could be either one, though if I had to guess, I would say it is Armistead, since he had a national ranking. But probably, one of those two guys just happened to be in Washington DC for some reason.

from #199 There is a discrepancy in scores in the ITF version and ATP version of US Open 1979 R128. Smid-Scanlon ATP has 6-3,6-3,2-6,6-3. ITF has 6-3,6-3,2-6,3-6,6-3

[JS] I can't find the result in contemporary newspapers. It's probably in a magazine like World Tennis. Sticking with the ATP score for now.
