I thought you did a really great job with your homework 4 - here are some comments:

• Detailed process report
• It looks like some kind of error happened with the numbering for your first task, as much of your text of preceded by "1.", while I'm guessing that you meant for the numbers to increase in subsequent order along with your points
• Nice exploration of data reshaping. I like that the graphs you chose to do came in a logical order and I was easily about to follow your decision making process for which plot to do next and why.
• Good use of join functions. I appreciated the explanations following each join function, as it made it easy for me to understand what you learned about each one.

Hi Jenn,

Nice job on your homework! A few comments on the first part:

• Nice job reshaping the data. I wouldn't have thought to use a summary table.
• Your notes throughout have been thoughtful and easy to follow.
• One small critique of your last graph. I wouldn't have used an alpha on your geom_point, it makes it difficult to discern what points correspond to what years.
• Here's a solution to your final graph that only uses one call of geom_point (it also doesn't use the reformatted, spread out data): gapminder %>% group_by(continent,year) %>% summarize(Mean_lifeExp=mean(lifeExp)) %>% ggplot(aes(x=year,y=Mean_lifeExp,color=continent))+geom_point()

And a couple comments on the second part:

• Good exploration of the join functions.
• You could've used the kable() function on this part.

@vmichalowski Thank you so much for your feedback! I didn't even notice the error with numbering

To my TAs: on my .Rmd file you can see that my original numbering was just 1. 2. 3. This was reformatted after knitr to be all 1. I experimented a bit and found that if I title the items (e.g., #1.) then it was fine. Why doesn't my original way work? Any insight here would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi @jenncscampbell, here are some comments about your hw04:

• Task 1 was well done! Your workflow was explained well and you were able to produce the wide format table in the end. However, your plots did not render on GitHub! Make sure you double check before submitting your assignment. However, the code for the plots looks correct. When plotting the life expectancies of Africa vs. Asia, I do not think that it makes contextual sense to put a geom_smooth() line on the plot (what is the line trying to show). It might be better just to put a line that follows the function X=Y. Points that are above that line indicate Africa has a higher mean life expectancy for that year, and vice versa.
• Cool dataset for task 2! Your explanations for each type of join are clear, but the tables that you show do not illustrate the differences well. I can just see a lot of Afghanistan and not much else. I would suggest subsetting your data (group by year since year is not really relevant here) and perhaps select a smaller list of countries to work with. In general, you should knit tables with kable() when you can since it produces much nicer tables!
• Similar for activity 3, it is not necessary to show the entire dataset, a subset is fine as long as the point remains the same.
• Solid work overall, good job!

Your grade will be emailed to you at a later date.

Edit: It looks like your reviewers were able to see your plots and that you made changes after submission which may have caused your plots to disappear. I saw your plots in one of the subfolders, but try to make sure they still show up in your markdown document next time!

Sorry for the changes to the repo after the assignment! I started renaming the folders and organization things for hw 5 and things got a bit messy.

I just tried now to knit the doc and see if the graphs show and they show now. I don't really remember what I did yesterday but do you think it was that I forgot to knit it first? Is that the step that creates the .png files for the plots?

Hi @Jenncscampbell

If I had to guess, I would say that it was because you changed the names of the folder that everything was stored in from hw04_files to hw04. GitHub probably didn't know where to look for the figures so it omitted them altogether. Notice that you have a new folder with the same figures called hw04_files now? You should have a similarly named folder in each of your homework folders which also have plots inside.
