Summary

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of a digital computer or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks commonly associated with intelligent beings. AI is achieved by programming computers to carry out tasks typically associated with human intelligence such as reasoning, problem solving, learning, perception, and using language. Learning is the ability to acquire knowledge by observing, trying, and storing information, while reasoning is the ability to draw inferences based on data. Problem solving is the ability to identify and solve complex problems, while perception is using sensory organs to analyze the environment. Language is a system of signs with meaning through convention and is distinguished by its productivity, meaning the ability to create an unlimited variety of sentences. This source also goes into Alan Turing's impact and the early history of AI.

Key Points

• Artificial intelligence is the project of developing systems that can think and act in a way similar to humans. • Learning, reasoning, problem solving, perception, and using language are components of intelligence. • Artificial intelligence programs have been used to solve a variety of problems and can even be programmed to understand language. • Understanding language involves more than just being able to respond fluently and requires one to have learned the language and been trained to take one’s place in the linguistic community.
