Although there are a few ways to do this, the most straight-forward option for this project would be to set the master branch as the publishing source.

Since each analysis or sub-project will have it's own folder anyway, any .html files can be rendered there without having to merge or move them to another folder. The index.html file in the repository's top level will just need links added.

I like this idea. In it, I am assuming the folders are not based on users but on questions/analyses.

rparrish commented 7 years ago

yes, that is correct.

In my initial work that I just pushed to this repo, the html output of rmd was not shipped.. I am seeing this behavior for the first time. Any thoughts?

rparrish commented 7 years ago

This is because the .gitignore file has ".html" file listed as a file time to exclude from the repository.

There's a pending pull request to the main repository that fixes this. In the meantime, you can just remove .html from your copy of .gitignore. Then you should be able to add and commit .html files

Nice job, Vivek, good start for the analysis. I wonder if we could convert the raw numbers of offenses to rates by either period of time, e.g. per week, or per resident or per area, or both. I'm thinking some neighborhoods are much bigger than others and/or have more people, so you would expect more crime just because of that. For example, is Nevada really such a crime-riden neighborhood, or just much bigger than the others? The required data is probably in the neighborhood shapefile, i'll take a look if I can get it out. I like the Shiny app idea to look at the crime numbers per neighborhood. I would also turn around the figure to show each crime in each of the neighborhoods, with offense type on the top. See which one is informative. Can you turn the x axis labels sideways on that figure? Great start, Vivek, thanks for investing the time!
