I'd seen this on mobile - Chrome's data saver was causing issues with Font Awesome. However, I don't think the desktop version has data saver. It works fine for me on desktop - Chrome is the browser I normally use, and the one I did most testing on.
What version of Chrome are you running? I know there were Font Awesome issues with one version of Chrome, but I think that was a couple of years ago, so it's unlikely to be that unless you're severely out of date.
Anything (errors, failed network requests) showing up in the developer console?
You're right. It was Data Saver. I disabled it and the icons are back. Thanks.
Also, thanks for this awesome project. Really good stuff.

I'm actually going to reopen this, and adjust the title. I think we do need to at some point look into why data saver breaks the icons.
