This could be handled via e-mail to SMS by each user's cellular provider:

That would save costs on this end, but is not as reliable, nor as immediate, as
setting up a real service.

I just started using the SMS notification from Google Calendar, and it appears
to be
using this same method for notifications. I think this would be a good place to
start, and then possibly offer the more reliable, immediate, real SMS service
for
paid users. I'm thinking right now about Twitter's issues with keeping the
shortcodes
running and how Sandy should be able to offer a more stable (paid) option for
those
who are going to seriously rely on the service.
