It would be nice if some sort of variable explorer would be added to jupyter-notebook and/or jupyter-lab

Issue solved. The standard .yml file as generated from the .tsv file in the tcysubmodule adds both jupyter-lab and a variable inspector (ttps://github.com/lckr/jupyterlab-variableInspector) to the conda env. I tested it out and it works (when opening jupyter lab, right click somewhere on white-space, then you can open the variable inspector). The variable inspector still struggles with R objects but that's not a big deal for now.
