Current base:
What I found:
Is this correct?
Almost all of the blocks are different to the legacy pack. I've got my personal pack that has all the same blocks that JSTR has, but lots of them are in 64x. So I'll look around and find the 32x files and upload the pack.
Yes those are the correct ores
I would like to try to more the JSTR pack to be closer to the vanilla pack. I want Jim's work to show through, and allow the people working on modded to work on modded textures and not worry about the vanilla ones.
@Greenhawk837 Cool! Once we can figure out all the differences we can go from there. I am thinking that we can just have the ores and ingots (if those are different) be changed for the JSTR pack but have the rest stay the JS Legacy ones. Thoughts?
There are a lot of advantages by making it closer to the Legacy pack, mainly it would get updates instead of the vanilla part of the pack going stale for months.
But I know that I really don't like the look of the Legacy pack, which is one of the main reasons I stopped working on it and just continued on my own personal John Smith pack.
To make things easier, I do think it might be worth finding a middle ground, but some of the textures are so different to the legacy textures that they just don't fit in with some of the modded textures that are based from the JSTR versions.
Late to the party, but here is what I've found as far as downloads (linked from MCF)

Depending on which base textures are used (legacy vs JSTR), as Greenhawk mentioned, there are quite a few differences. Doors, beds, endstone, enchanting tables, wool, planks, and TNT are examples of differences between legacy 1.6.2 and JSTR
Agreed a middle ground would be good.
I am thinking of trying to be as minimalistic as possible. As modded textures out weight the small number of vanilla textures, I think we can just do some tweaks (stone/ores) and other large terrain if needed.
What should have its own JSTR textures, and what other ones can we let Jim update and take care of?
The thing is, just changing something like the stone bricks affects not only that texture, but all of the modded blocks use stone bricks as a base, like some of the forestry machines. requiring a lot of work to either change all of the affected blocks or leaving an inconsistency.
Meaning that we are very limited as to what we can change
I think we can get out the inconsistencies with the 1.7.x update. Prime time to make any changes when just porting the texture up. I feel like the stone is a good thing to keep as it really makes it easier to look at with all the modded ores/quarrys used in modded.
Edit: I also thing forestry changed how it does the blocks, I can't seem to fine the file in the repo any more. Just seems to be a lot of wood and trees now lol.
oh I didn't know that. would using teamspeak be easier for a discussion?
"No input devices found"
Gotta love Linux sometimes. Anyway, not sure if this is or was mentioned in TS, but in the latest 1.7 legacy build that Jim hosts, he does include an alternates folder specific to JSTR. While not a complete list of alternates compared to the 1.6.2 JSTR (smooth dirt, wool, jungle and spruce planks are what I can find as lacking in the alternates... probably a couple more, but a 10.1" screen doesn't help much at the moment), that is what I would personally use as a middle ground.... in any case, whatever you all decide as a base texture standard is fine with me.
What we ended up pulling together on TS. Thank you @kardain for that, we used that folder as a base for the changes. So it is looking like we are going to try to use the JS Legacy pack as a base, and then apply this patch on top. We will go from there, and learn what needs to change etc.
Test out this overwrite patch and let me know: http://goo.gl/JkHxYZ
I'm on Ubuntu. I had to install Pulse Audio and set my sound input to analog in the system sound settings to get TS working.
Shoeboxam, mine was a hardware fault. Mic jacks aren't supposed to come out with the plug.
Overwrite patch worked like a treat.
From the todo, mycel
This matches the side texture used by the grass block
This matches the dirt texture
Not on the todo list, nor in the patch - podzol (can't remember if that's a 1.7.2 block or later. Been a time since I've played vanilla). JSC was kind enough to include an alternate for that, the side texture of which matches the grass block.
TBH, the only other block I can see changing back would be the TNT side. It kind of looks off to me with the top showing 9 and the side showing 16 in the container. After the patch file, there still are some differences between the 1.6.4 base and the proposed 1.7.2 (new blocks excluded), but IMO they are improvements over the 1.6.4 textures (ie. enchanting table and bookshelf look much cleaner)
I did that podzol texture a few months back. also your mycelium side looks good.
I think that the TNT block needs all sides to be changed or just left as it was
Created a repo: https://github.com/John-Smith-Modded/JSTR-Overwrites
I want to compile a list of what is the difference between the current legacy pack and the "JSTR base" that is used. I also want to figure out why these changes were made.
Currently the John Smith Legacy base is being used, so I want to sort out the differences so we can work that into the system.
So far all what I know is that the stone is different? Maybe the ores too? Upload the textures if you have them.
Let me know @Greenhawk837 @Glowstrontium @Satellence @Zica @Satellence @kardain Thanks!
