Automatically choose sipager vs simapper (ie wiki vs zoomable image)

What is the criteria to make a zoomable image with tile generation etc?

Considerations:

• IIRC the guideline today is something like 5-10 MB is the gray area, but its ultimately up to the uploader
• Main goals were:
  • 1) make really large images reasonable to view
  • 2) reduce bandwith to make mobile loading times faster / reasonable
• Provides a way to link to a specific area on the die
• More overhead / data to track
• An image of the same pixel size can have different compression options => wildly varying size
• Average users can move / rename wiki files but not /map files

I've actually abused the Google Maps API for this kind of thing before. I think it's a great idea. If it helps, I wrote a script to generate map tiles at multiple zoom levels in GIMP.

Thanks! But we already have a workflow to make the zoomable images. This is more about the policy of when to use them vs a simple image.
