I didn't see any tests for the predefined git commands but would be happy to add some if it would be helpful.

Hey John! I'm going to close this for now as we're starting to push more commits to what was initially just this PR. If you're interested in merging either the original commit or any of the new stuff we'll re-open multiple pull requests, but for now I'm going to close it so we can continue to push commits as we need changes.
