Not directly related to JoinMarket, but there are a lot of people around here who have thought deeply about using bitcoin privately.

This page really needs updating, most of the understanding is from 2011 https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Anonymity

We could also write a new page called something like "how to use bitcoin anonymously" which includes everything.

There is some content here https://www.reddit.com/r/joinmarket/comments/3l4ngt/what_is_the_best_way_to_move_funds_from_one/

People can obtain bitcoin wiki accounts for free by joining #bitcoin-wiki on freenode and asking and waiting.

Some examples of bad privacy which can be examples:

This post links to this this transaction which combines lots of coins (coming from a reused address) into one output. We can see this guys cash flow, his earnings over time, it's linked to his reddit account so we know what his business is (selling bitcoin paper wallets) and using closure analysis as in walletexplorer.com we can see roughly how much, when and what he spends his money on (although when he spends to bitpay or another centralized institution, they stop us seeing exactly which goods or services he's buying).

Another example is this post although it has less obvious privacy-ruining potential.

TODO, look up the bitcoin wiki policy on dox and privacy, it may be kinder to blur out people's names/bitcoin addresses/tx hashes.

Mike Hearn's blog post has a great section of privacy information leaks when spending coins in the section on merge avoidance. Ignore all the stuff about coinjoin as it was written before JoinMarket existed (and indeed helped inspire it) https://medium.com/@octskyward/merge-avoidance-7f95a386692f#.j2p0elspu

A common view people often have is that one single technology can solve all your privacy problems. People might download the tor browser, go to 4chan.onion and tell everyone their real name and address, saying "I'm on tor, I'm anonymous"

Look up and read Kristov Atlas's Anonymous Bitcoin Book

This poster is seriously confused and it's helpful to read his post and better understand how a layman thinks about privacy issues

Closing this issue now that I've updated the privacy page https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Privacy
