This is a question for the app developer about what their app needs.

I faced the same issue. It would be workaroundable if Titanium Backup worked,
by restoring data from a successful installation on a phone...

Titanium Backup now works with x86, you can restore a working whatsapp
installation and it works just fine (tested)

I have whatsapp on SGS2 (non-rooted). I don't want to root it just yet. I have
also configured a Virtualbox image of Android x86 on my laptop. Whatsapp gives
the "cannot identity the device" error as usual. Can anyone explain
step-by-step how to get it to work. I can try to image the whatsapp from my
phone to my vm.

Hi, I really like this discussion. This was really helpful. Because it gave me
some good ideas how to work around the problem. To be exact, the message that
pops up: Android is not supported on tablet...".
Solution
1. Get Titanium Backup Pro. This surely works.
2. Install bluestacks for android.
3. Install Titanium Backup Pro on bluestacks.
4. Install whatsapp on this bluestacks and configure.
5. Backup with Titanium Backup Pro!
1. Install Titanium Backup Pro also on x86 android emulation via VmWare. Im
using the android-x86-2.2-r2-eeepc.iso from http://www.android-x86.org/download
with VmWare workstation 8.0. With the .vmx remod to get internet working. You
need to open the *.vmx file in notepad from you android VmWare file location
and adjust the value ethernet0.virtualDev = "vlance" to what it says now. There
is some other value there it needs to be changed to vlance instead o.k.?
2. Somehow get the data you backt up in bluestacks to your android project. I
used an html server to push this data. You could also use ftp with the app
andFtp. To be precise i used Skydrive to move the files from bluestacks to my
ftp server. After this i used AndFtp app for x86 android. Then connected to my
ftp site and imported the data.
3. I used File Expert to move the data to the /mnt/sdcard/TitaniumBackup
folder. When you backup a file using Titanium Backup Pro, it makes three files.
Make sure to copy these three files to the right location.
4. Open Titanium Backup Pro again, close and open it. So it reloads the data
newly put in the folder. Then go to the Backup/Restore tab. Scroll down and YES
it is finally there. Restore the Whatsapp apk with APP+DATA obviously. BAM It
works. Thank you guys for all the good tips. Was a big workaround eventually it
works nice!

Ps. You should use Titanium Backup pro because it has the special function to
import a .rom from a different divice. If you don't use pro it doesn't work. I
Tried this.
