Me, too. This is such a great little program...when it works. :/ Sadly, it seems like the developer has no commitment to keeping it going? Looks like the last comment here in the issues page from the developer was in November of... 2021. As others have said - perhaps just make it a PAID app? I'd GLADLY pay for it if it was maintained.
I read somewhere before your post that this happens when a program updates. So the program updating, resets the icon.
Hi dragon,
Yes! You're correct. I read that, too.
I feel disappointed that the developer of Tileiconifier hasn't taken the time to offer a fix. I mean - seeing as how folks can have scores of tiles in their start menu - having to constantly rebuild them is less than optimal.
In actuality, it seems like the app should be called:
Temporary Tileiconifier
It appears like a form of disregard for users? Like, "Ha, ha!" This program doesn't REALLY work but...you'll find out later. LOL!" :((
Don't hold your breath for an update! Jonno12345 has no intention to update or improve this software. He created this software while he was unemployed in 2016 and has only provided the latest update 3.1.1.2 two years ago. From the author: "Firstly, sorry for the lack of updates. Honestly, I never expected this to get so much usage, as it was only ever released as a response to a question over on Superuser to show the source code didn't have anything malicious within. I certainly never expected quite as many stars as it currently has. When I wrote this originally I had a lot of spare time as I was mid travelling and didn't have any full time employment, and since then, personal and work life have got a lot busier."
I have been using Stardock's Start11 on my Windows 10 system for about a year and it provides many more features for custom icons on the start menu than TileIconifier. There is a bit of a learning curve, but I find it superior to TileIconifier. The only thing I use TileIconifier for is to position the icon within the tile, but that is achievable through edits of the actual icon. It also works with Windows 11.
Example of Start11 start menu:

Hey. I'm sorry you feel that way. I made this application 7 years ago. I promoted it once, in a couple of places, the first time it was released, and never personally since. It uses a feature introduced with Windows 8. People have very custom setups, the operating system has changed, I don't believe it even works in Windows 11 anymore, so a quick fix is often not what is actually required. It was always just a way to leverage a functionality that Microsoft made available to application developers, but not to end users, and I made it on a whim for a single user on a forum to get around their problem at the time. It was a hack approach, and completely at the whim of a developer to override it at any moment, or Microsoft to end support for it whenever they felt like.
As you've probably noted, the entire application is open source. You are welcome to fork it, fix it, do anything you like with it under the licence provided. If it works for you, I'm glad, I spent a number of months on it about 7 years ago now, but have only found time to make minor changes since that point, and as you can see fairly infrequently as my life is very different to what it was when I had time for this. I assure you it's not out of disregard for anyone, there is no fee for using the application, I have never tried to promote it beyond the point where I first released it, so I'm sorry if somehow you feel missold.
There are many great alternatives out there, where you can pay those developers and studios for the level of support you desire, and I hope you find something that can achieve what you want. I may still in future make small updates to this, but honestly had it not have been as popular as it appears to be, I have been more tempted to remove the project entirely as I too don't believe it's fit for purpose anymore after 6+ years of changes I have been unable to keep up with. However, it has a community using it, and out of respect for those users who still have a purpose for it I have kept it online.
Example of Start11 start menu:
That looks real cool, I wish it was free.

It's only $5.99 US, and well worth it.
Hi All,
@Jonno12345 ! Ah! Sounds like the popularity of the app caught you by surprise! I'll tell you, every time I open it up and SEE how many features you engineered into it, seeing as how you did it pretty much off the top of your head, I'll tell you, when I see that I feel impressed.
THANK YOU for taking the time to make it, share it and update it as much as you have.
I can only IMAGINE what you 've got cooking in your OWN work life! I'll bet you've not got a second to spare. Am I right? Skills like yours are not the kind that would ever lay fallow.
You did mention that you may still make small updates - PLEASE if there's just ONE you can get to...the resetting images?
From all I can see it seems to be related to updates? Perhaps a keystroke or a subroutine - something like:
RE-ICONIFY
So that users would still have to DO something, but not get too into the weeds - sort of like pick up all the PREVIOUS settings except the new target?
If you could do that...for REALS - as the kids once used to say...that would be perfect!
Seems like Win10 is still in use on about 75% of machines: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-11/why-users-are-not-upgrading-to-windows-11-is-windows-11-a/td-p/3611663
So, given that there seems to be still a LOT of Win 10 users...I feel your good work is actually IN demand!
I've TRIED Start 11, and even another one of their products called
Fences.
For me it cause a H U G E slowdown of my system.
I've checked alternative to your own app by name, some of them look...SUSPICIOUSLY similar! Like someone grabbed your code and tried to repackage it. :((
For my money, there's NOTHING as well-made as TileIconifier.
Finally, please can you share any place where we can donate to your hard work?
Again, many kind thanks. :)))
Sincerely,
Kertripmerth
I keep having icons randomly reset themselves.
