Rhode Island is great and all...but its tiny. A lot of map-based representations it probably only gets a few pixels. The standard solution is a fly-away label.
Abstract Rendering could be used to:
(1) Decide if it is "small enough" to need special treatment (maybe you're zoomed in right now)
(2) If it is different enough from its neighbors (if the whole easter seaboard is homogenous with respect to the treatment, do I really need to label Rhode Island?)
(3) To not only do a fly-away, but put a representative mark on the fly-away (if RI is red among blue, put a little red square on the fly-away...perhaps)
This is an experimental idea, but worth playing with.
